C. WILLIAM RUTH, P.E., PRES.
THE JOHN J. BARRY COMPANY
ENGINEERING PROFILE
Specialized HVAC PROJECTS:
INDUSTRIAL VENTILATION OF AEROSOL GAS HOUSES:
---Companies include: Mennen Corporation, Ortho-Pharmaceutical (Johnson & Johnson), Cello Corp., Piedmont Laboratories, and GRR Aerosols.
--- 30 years experience providing design consultation, developing fabrication drawings, selecting, and purchasing of mechanical equipment, with contract management, coordination, installation, and commissioning of design-build systems.
---Since 1986: Continued association with Mr. Donald E. Rowson, Pres/CEO with Industrial Hydrocarbons, Inc. (a California based company specializing in the consultation of safe and proper handling of hydrocarbons and other related safety issues to Industrial Manufacturing Firms across the country and overseas). Mr. C. William Ruth/JJB is part of a consortium with IH for the development and installation of custom Ventilation Systems, in accordance with NFPA Codes for Aerosol filling and/or testing, where there is danger of expelling highly explosive hydrocarbon gases. Experience includes duct and hood design with particular emphasis on creating a laminar flow at the floor level to "sweep" any fugitive hydrocarbon vapors out of the gassing house. Fan and ventilation systems designed for hazardous Div. I, Class I, Group C environments. Experience includes: Structural steel specifications, design, and drawings relative to support of the ventilation and mechanical equipment.
U.S. NAVY PORTABLE HVAC AND CHILLER UNITS:
Designed, specified and purchased equipment, developed fabrication drawings, supervised fabrication, and conducted quality control testing prior to shipment on (10) Portable HVAC Units and (4) Portable Chiller Units. Designs included: structural support steel, equipment/unit balance; electrical power and control wiring schematics, electrical installation drawings, electrical power and control component selection and purchase; coordination of sub-contractors; refrigerant system design including selection of specific refrigeration specialties, evaporators, condensers, hot-gas bypass coils, and heat exchangers utilizing salt water along pier for refrigerant heat exchange medium; blowers and electric resistance heaters selection and purchase on HVAC units.
CONSULTING CHIEF ENGINEER FOR JENKINS ENVIRONMENTAL, INC.:
---Since 1980, acting as Chief Mechanical Engineer for JEI, Mr. Ruth has provided the "on site" observations necessary to design, develop, and correct Indoor Air Quality environmental problems on such projects as:
+ FIL-TEC: (Industrial Thread Coater & Mfgr. in Hagerstown, Md.). Installed used 16,000 CFM Thermal Oxidizer for Coater Ovens, involving dismantle and reassembly, new concrete pad, controls, and successful stack test. Conducted feasibility study to reduce production costs with the installation of a heat exchanger in the exhaust air stream (460 degrees) to preheat incoming coater oven air.
+ LOYOLA COLLEGE: Indoor Air Quality Ventilation Surveys with reports for corrective procedures to the HVAC or other system. Also, designed and installed an automatic pneumatic/electrical-controlled groundwater oil remediation system.
+ BRUNING PAINT COMPANY: Designed ventilation system, including steam coil, traps, and steam specialties selection; pneumatic temperature control, dust collector unit and system design, filtered make-up air unit, ductwork, and system design, complete with drawings and specifications for Bruning's New Epoxy Paint Line.
+ SAINT TIMOTHY'S SCHOOL: Designed and coordinated installation of a Radon Gas Ventilation System.
+ SOCIAL SERVICES - 1510 GUILFORD AVE.: Designed an odor control exhaust ventilation system to minimize printing solvent fumes from permeating throughout the building, while also discharging to atmosphere on first floor at a high velocity to propel vapors far from building to avoid building's fresh air intakes.
+ FLOWSERVE PUMP DIVISION: Custom designed split-hood over lathe with dust collection and Mercury absorbent filtration to remove mercury from the exhaust airstream and to allow reintroduction back into the room.
+ CENVEO PRINTING CO: Designed and installed a central 16,000 CFM Thermal Oxidizer System to replace (3) ineffective Catalytic Oxidizers to reduce VOC emissions to keep the plant in compliance with EPA & OSHA discharge requirements, while not losing any downtime of the high-speed printing presses discharging into a common 36” diameter exhaust main into the new Oxidizer. Designed and upgraded the plant’s incoming gas pressure and gas piping system for the presses and Oxidizer.
PACKAGED DEHUMIDIFICATION UNITS AND SYSTEMS:
---30 years experience as an O.E.M. (Original Equipment Manufacturer) designing and fabricating low dewpoint (minus 50oF DP. - less than 2% relative humidity) and medium humidity (30% RH) Environmental Control Units, called “EINBAR CLIMATE CONTROLLERS”.
---Knowledge includes psychometric and heat exchange calculations to determine and select proper components such as desiccant wheel, exhaust air heat exchanger, evaporator (either direct-expansion or chilled water), condenser (either water-cooled or air-cooled), reactivation heat energy (steam, electric, gas, or hot water), structural steel support for unit, integrated component location on steel base, inter-connected ductwork, fork lift and/or crane lifts, all relevant piping systems, including steam, refrigeration, chilled water, hot water, condenser water, and associated support systems such as cooling tower, condenser water pump, and indoor sump design.
---Electrical power and control wiring schematics, electrical installation drawings, electrical power and control component selection and purchase, and coordination of sub-contractors are also part of the total integration of many components required to provide industry with high-quality and highly-reliable "EINBAR CLIMATE CONTROLLERS".
